Summary0000082: Unclear how to move songs from cache into the library
DescriptionRight now, when I move songs from the cache to the library, a .cda file is copied rather than the .wma file that was generated. How is a user supposed to move files between the cache and the library?

On a related note, when the user looks at a file from the Virtual CD in the library, it appears as a CD and doesn't show the file attributes that actually exist (e.g. that it's a WMA file).

I would suggest that both of these issues can be resolved by showing Virtual CD contents in the library in the following manner:

Path: [Virtual CD] x:/yyy/<artist>-<album>.wma

If the user moves one of these files from a Virtual CD node to C:/My Music/ then the .wma file should be moved.

Is there a reason why this shouldn't be the case?

I think that the Path field should be filled with the path to the original file. Actually the path to the cache version is not interesting at all, I don't see any reason why user would need it. It is more important to know where the original file is.

Re. copy (or convert) from cache. Ok, in this case the cached file can be copied.

Sounds fine. But it's important that the 'copy' metaphor be used so that the user can d&d songs from the cache to other parts of the library.

I take that back. I'm currently in a situation where I've cached some of the files on a CD but not others, but there's no way to tell which of all of the songs have been cached! i.e. whether I look under Album, Artist, etc. all of the songs are listed as if they're on the CD but haven't been cached. The only place to tell if a song is cached in in the cache folder, however, it doesn't provide a view of all the songs that weren't cached.

I would suggest that the idea that I proposed in the bug description of showing path [Virtual CD] would resolve this issue.

I would like to keep the path field filled with the original path. What about adding a new column "Virtual CD", which would show a checkmark [v] when the track is cached? This column would be hidden by default (and "Preview" column can be added as well).

Your solution sounds better, although to be clear about my proposal, I was only proposing a change to what's already implemented for the path. i.e. currently, paths for tracks that are from a CD are listed as follows when the CD is not inserted:
[Paul Simon - Graceland]\Trackx.cda .
This becomes
D:/Trackx.cda once a CD is inserted.

My proposal was to always show non-inserted CDs as:
[CD - Paul Simon - Graceland]\Trackx.cda
To show inserted CDs as:
[CD] D:/Trackx.cdo
And to show Virtual CDs as:
[VCD] D:/Track.cda

If we go with your solution, I'd suggest the heading be 'Source' and the column also indicate CD for CDs.

From what we have written here I think that the best solution would be to make a new column "Source" with possible values - HD, CD, Audio CD, Network, VCD, Preview (note that some values can be shown together - e.g. "Audio CD + VCD").

Sounds good (although I'm going to enter another bug soon that may change your mind).

Note: as a general philosophy, I don't think we should fix these types of VCD bugs, but rather focus our efforts on fixing the fundamental problems of the vcd--i.e. bug 0000246.
