Summary0003082: Party mode: Disable multi-select (revert?)
DescriptionA user suggested in forum to disable more features in Party mode:

- Disable more from party mode
There are a couple of options I'm missing from the party mode disable list:
1) Disable multiselect. Disable the ability to add more than one song at a time. Most crucially the posibility for people unfamilliar with the software to accidentally double click on an album or an artist etc.
2) Disable drag-and-drop into the now playing list. Even with playlist manipulation disabled, users are still able to drag a new song to anywhere on the list they like.
------------------------

I'd also add, that we will have to review the new features in MM 3.0 and decide what will be need to be disabled (and configurable).

I think that

1) multi-select should always be disabled in Party mode (i.e. if track manipulation is allow, it should behave like a jukebox where tracks are selected one-by-one). This would imply that no configuration is required. This isn't critical for MM3.

2) the fact that drag and drop works is a bug. This needs to be fixed for MM3. I'll create a separate bug to track this issue.

Tested 1039. The disabled multi-select works partially, however, it still allows for multi-select by selecting an Artist, Album, Playlist, etc. and then clicking Play Now/Play Next/Play Last. If multi-select is disabled, it shouldn't be possible to select more than one track at a time even by selecting a node.

HOWEVER, the originally suggested approach of just disabling multi-select is problematic since it conflicts with the UI which allows the user to configure the following 'Play Now' options:
-Clear tracks & play selected + subsequent

Moreover, there may be situations (e.g. Guest DJ) where forced disabling of multi-select might be a problem.

Thus, a better approach might be:
[ ] Disable multi-select (add one track at a time)

AND if this option is enabled, remove the Play Now option to:
-Clear tracks & play selected + subsequent

Based on this ticket:

it looks like we should revert this??

Assigning to Rusty for decision.

My inclination is that this can be resolved with the approach described in my last comment i.e. add:

[ ] Disable multi-select (add one track at a time)

Note: I don't think that this is a critical issue. It can wait until 3.1.

Build 1195: I reverted the auto-disabling multi-select in party mode.
The reasons are:
1. http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/staff/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=viewticket&ticketid=271&noteconfirm=1

2. The issue "add one track at a time" is not about disabling multi-select. It is rather about disabling the 'Play Now', 'Play Next' and 'Play Last' actions.
i.e. If you wish MM to behave like jukebox you can set double-click action (when tracks are playing) to "Play last". It is default settings for Party mode and causes that double-clicking a track enqueues the track in Now Playing.
Problem is that e.g. 'Play now' (or 'Play Next', 'Play Last') can be still used when a tracks/nodes are selected and it breaks the jukebox functionality.
So I would suggest to add a config entry to the
Options|Party Mode|"Player control" group box:

[ ] Disable 'Play now', 'Play next', 'Play Last' (can be executed only by double-click)

Assigning to Rusty for review/wording.

Sorry for the previous suggestion, I just found out (forgot) that the jukebox behaviour can be already achieved by

[x] Disable Player controls and Track re-ordering
  [ ] Enable volume, play/pause controls

so I guess this issue can be resolved?

We can resolve after making a couple of small changes:

1) Context help should be clarified:

This makes MediaMonkey function more like a jukebox, preventing users from stopping music, switching tracks, or changing volume, balance or equalizer settings.

-->

This makes MediaMonkey function more like a jukebox, preventing users from stopping or switching tracks; changing volume, balance or equalizer settings; and re-ordering / removing tracks, or adding multiple tracks at once.

2) If 'Disable Player Controls and Track reordering' is enabled, then 'Clear Tracks & play selected + subsequent' should be disabled.

Further discussion yielded the following:
'[x] Disable Player controls and Track reordering'
--> Play Now and Play Next should be disabled (both as a menu item, and as a double-click option).

New option:
'[x] Disable adding multiple tracks at once'
---> user can't select multiple tracks in the playlist
---> if user selects a node and clicks Play Last, only the first track plays.

BUT, as Ludek pointed out, this means that the only real effect of the above option is that the 'Play Last' button would be removed and that users could control multiple-selection separately. The essential point, though is that there's never really a need to have player controls/track re-ordering disabled while allowing multiple tracks to be added (since if you're allowing multiple tracks to be added, you presumably would also allow the user to control the player).

Thus, the alternative suggestion is:

[x] Disable Player controls, Track re-ordering
change to:
[x] Enable Jukebox behavior
--->Disables stop, change tracks, volume, balance, equalizer, multiple track addition
--->Player controls box greyed out with defaults of 1) When Playback is stopped: _Play Now_, 2) When tracks are playing: _Play Last_, 3) 'Play Now' Action: _Play Selected track only_

Help tip: This makes MediaMonkey function like a jukebox, preventing users from stopping or switching tracks; changing volume, balance or equalizer settings; re-ordering & removing tracks, or adding multiple tracks at once.

It would probably be a good idea to move 'Disable repositioning of dialogs and controls' above the 'Enable Jukebox behavior' so that the relationship between Jukebox behaviour and the Player Controls box is more obvious.

Implemented the last suggested solution in build 1195.

Note I left '[x] Disable Player controls and Track reordering'
(i.e. I didn't rename to '[x] Enable Jukebox behavior') so that it is more clear that the checkbox disables the 'Player Controls' group box.
