| Description | MM 3.0 will add support for Album Gain. The following are some of the key requirements: 1a) User should be able to globally select whether Track/Album/Both types of volume leveling information should be stored 1b) When user manually chooses to analyze tracks, assuming Album Gain analysis is enabled, it should only be calculated if the selected tracks are in consecutive order, (and if all tracks on the album have been selected?). Perhaps, MM should have error messages for: i) only some tracks on the album have been selected ii) some tracks on the album are missing The user should also be presented with an error message if tracks will not be ascribed Album Gain values. 1c) When the user chooses to analyze track automatically, assuming Album Gain analysis is enabled, it should only be calculated when there are x consecutive tracks on an album. 2) When the user plays back tracks, he should have the ability to choose Album or Track Gain or 'Smart Gain' on the fly (but is this too much for the Player menu??). Smart Gain would switch between replay gain and album gain modes automatically, using Album gain whenever all the tracks on an Album begin playing in consecutive order. Note: We could just as easily do without smart gain to begin with--it may add too much risk. 3) When the user burns an Audio CD, Album Gain should be used if the tracks are all consecutive tracks from an album and they possess Album Gain data. (note: I assume that the 'Baseline Volume Level' would still be used for Album Gain) 4) When the user rips an Audio CD, do we want to do anything depending on whether the user enables 'level volume'? Or should we get rid of the 'Level Volume' option here if the user has enabled Album Gain since the level volume option will permanently eliminate the possibility of getting valid Album Gain information. 1a) I don't think it's necessary, I think that both can be stored. Unless we implement a more complex selection of what to write to tags, e.g.: A. Write ratings to tags A1. What e-mail address to associate with tagging ratings to tracks B. As you suggested: write album and track leveling to tags? In what format to ID3 (Foobar format, RGAD frame, RVA2 frame). Feel free to open a new issue based on this. 1b) This is already implemented in MM 3.0, consecutive order isn't necessary and I wouldn't implement warning dialogs, it would just stop leveling. 1c) I don't think so, I don't think there's a reason why to limit users this way - e.g. when user misses some tracks from an album (e.g. a damaged CD user ripped from), why couldn't he use album leveling? 2) Agreed, Smart Gain not implemented yet, I'm not sure it's useful. 3) Again, I wouldn't limit user this way, it would probably make sense to let user choose whether to use album or track leveling. In order to not make burning dialog too complex, it would probably make sense to add this configuration to Options dialog. 4) Good point, but I don't see a good solution for this and so I'd leave it as is - i.e. let user to Level Volume, but possibly add some clarification about it to help. |
