I've posted a debug log of this to the ftp server.

IMPORTANT Note: as I observed the bug this time I realize that my original description was incorrect. What actually happens (at least in this round of testing) is:
a) Pause --> MM pauses
b) Play --> playback resumes
c) Pause --> mm pauses
d) Play --> white noise
e) step a...

More information:
-MM 2.x with Nullsoft DirectSound plugin doesn't have the problem
-WMP doesn't have the problem
-VLC doesn't have the problem
-Winamp _does_ have the problem

Winamp forums indicate that it is related to hardware acceleration.
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?s=8ceb949a634bc8c3f689d2a93e8f0d74&threadid=165381&highlight=noise+AND+soundmax

So then when I test MM 2.x with the DirectSound plugin with 'Hardware Acceleration' enabled --> I'm able to replicate the problem!

So the solution is to add a configuration item to the new MediaMonkey DirectSound driver:
[x] Enable hardware acceleration

(I suppose we should continue to leave it enabled by default).

note: dxdiag can be used to disable hardware acceleration at the system level.
