Summary0019606: Japanese characters don't display correctly (regression)
DescriptionAs reported by our Japanase translator, depending on the skin used, MM5 displays Kanji characters in a manner that 'looks' Chinese. This may be related to:
a) the fact that the MM5 UI is based on Chrome, which also displays certain character sets in such a manner: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/617fad/psa_displaying_the_correct_versions_of_kanji_on_a/
b) that MM skins need the ability to define secondary fonts based on language (e.g. according to https://m1.material.io/style/typography.html#typography-typeface 'Noto' should be an alternate to 'Roboto' for east-asian languages).

According to the translator:
1) Material Design skins (which have Roboto as the skins' defined font) display in the manner described above
2) Monkey Groove (which has OpenSans as the skin's defined font) displays in the manner described above
3) Metro M (which has no font defined in the skin and therefore defaults to Chrome's default skins) does not exhibit the bug and renders Kanji correctly

Based on this feedback, it would seem that the issue is that specified fonts need to have fallbacks in cases where they don't correctly render Kanji (though I suppose that this issue may occur with other languages as well). In terms of Kanji, though, the translator mentioned that 'Meiryo UI' or "MS Gothic" are commonly used, though as per the article linked above, 'Noto' is used in conjunction with Roboto.

Based on the above, what approach would you suggest MM5 should take?

According to Sato, who completed the Japanese translation, there is a regression in this issue as now none of the skins display Japanese characters correctly.

Would it make sense that in the case of Japanese being the chosen language, that MM ignores the skin's font? OR perhaps to add a setting to enable or ignore custom fonts.
