Summary0019545: Volume leveling: New hybrid Album/Track leveling mode (was Album leveling shouldn't be preferred over track leveling)
DescriptionIn both MM4 and MM5, if 'level playback volume' is enabled, and MM is set to level 'By Album' and Album Leveling information exists, then Album Leveling is applied to the track rather than track leveling. This approach makes sense when playing multiple tracks from an album. BUT when playing multiple tracks from different albums, it can result in severe discrepancies in volume from one track to the next!

I personally experienced this recently, when an album was leveled, but one track had a Track Volume Coefficient of +14.4 and an Album Volume Coefficient of -8.6. When I then played the track as part of a mix, the track's volume is far too low (because it used the Album volume coefficient, even though that really only makes sense when playing the Album).

A better criteria to use to determine whether to apply Album Leveling vs Track Leveling would be to base it on whether the previously played track was from the same album. i.e. always apply track leveling except when the previously played track was from the same album in which case Album Leveling should be applied (if it exists).

I totally agree.

I prefer Track levelling in all cases except when burning Single Album Audio CD.

I would change all defaults to Track Leveling.

Track leveling is already set as default, from 0013430.
Album leveling is not preferred always, only if user selects "per Album" in Options - Player - Volume leveling - Level playback.

Suggested approach would cause, that every first track from album would never have album leveling applied.

Yes--this suggestion is for the case when level 'by album' is enabled (I've clarified the description). But perhaps it would be better to add a new category 'by Album/Track' and that it be the default. This hybrid approach seems to make more sense than either leveling purely by track or purely by album.

In regards to your comment that it would cause the first track from every album to only have track leveling applied: my suggestion was really just a suggested way of dealing with the issue--I'm open to other ideas that would be even smarter about this. But note that with the suggested approach, it would mean that the first track would play level with the previous track, and there would only be a smaller adjustment between the 2 tracks from the album (on the assumption that most tracks on an album are closer together in volume).
