Summary0018494: Return the ALL leaf to Folder and Location nodes
DescriptionThere is a lot of ongoing confusion and frustration in the Support Forum about the missing ALL leaf in the Folders and Location nodes.
I see good reason why the Recursive button and menu item have been introduced into MM5.
But I think that it was a mistake to remove the ALL leaf.
* the ALL leaf was exactly where you needed it, ie. where you were looking, and already had mouse focus ... the button and menu item is far away, and is not well known because it usually invisible
* the new facility is sticky, which makes it a PIA when navigating through a large folder ... ie the structured was walked only if I explicitly clicked ALL, but in MM5 this happens depended upon what I was doing last time I was in this node

The two largest causes of complaint and frustration in the the Support Forum were the removal of the sub-nodes and the removal of the All leaf.
I think both removals were a mistake. You have fixed one. I think that you should fix the other also.
I would retain the the Recursive button and menu option because
* it allows people to keep the lhs panel closed if they wish
* and its sticky behaviour is useful in some Use Cases

I never liked the MM4 implementation because it could be interpreted as though there was a folder named 'All'. Here's an idea for an addon and/or perhaps eventual re-inclusion:

The folder icon doesn't really serve a purpose since:
- in the tree, the user clicks the 'expansion' icon to expand it OR double clicks the folder name
- in the tracklist, the user clicks the folder to navigate into it

What if there was an option to change the folder icon to 'Recursive folder icons'. The folder icon would display with a recursion symbol, and clicking the icon would expand the folder recursively.

I don't think that there was any great danger of somebody thinking that there is a rouge "ALL" folder.
I would think that it will be somewhat familiar to them, because it mirrors the behaviour in the other nodes, which all have a "All Tracks" node introduced to the top of every top level node
I think that there is greater danger of a person being confused because the are not sure what the word "recursively" means.

You could reinstate the introduced folder with the name of "All Tracks" to make it consistent, but that is confusing IMO when the User is in Grid By Album View.
I think that you have fixed (aka broken) something that wasn't already broken.

"The folder icon doesn't really serve a purpose since:
- in the tree, the user clicks the 'expansion' icon to expand it OR double clicks the folder name"

The purpose is when the user opens a top level folder for an Artist, they have a one-click node in the tree to cause the main panel to list all tracks from all albums for that artist.

This less obvious in MM5, because the button is up on the Toolbar, and it is transient, and it has a name which confuses some ... also it is sticky, which the original mechanism wasn't ... meaning that you have to remember to turn it off, otherwise MM bogs down because it has to fully transverse everything you click from that point onwards.

After reading forum comments it seems to me that there are MM users who use MM solely in the Folder node (due to no understanding of, nor interest in, metadata tags). And they only use List view because they don't like clutter.

I don't understand why MM stuff is so eager to remove things that was asked for by many users. Just because you like it like that doesn't mean that others will share your sentiment.

You already had the option "Show 'All' node for contents ..." for those users who don't like such nodes to turn them off.

Thankfully you kept the M3U nodes in Folders branch, but it is funny that you removed the option to turn these nodes off. I suppose it was easier for you without it. Or because you just wanted to rename the "Appearance" page in the Options dialog box to "Fields". Yeah, I looked at pnlAppearance where you have the related lines commented, although it is not fully implemented.

Rusty, how do you like the current implementation with M3U nodes? It could be interpreted as there are folders named as these M3U files, right?
