Summary | 0001846: Automatically mount/unmount iPod & make it easy to manually unmount
Description | I haven't gotten the iPod to work yet, but apparently it must be unmounted before it can be disconnected. i.e. once I've set my iPod to 'Enable disk use', whenever I connect it, it is mounted and the iPod screen always has a warning 'Do Not Disconnect' until I manually unmount it. The concept of mounting/unmounting the drive is not going to be well understood by users, so it should be hidden as much as possible. My recommendation is that: -When MM is in 'Auto-Synchronize' mode, the iPod should automatically be unmounted except when the synchronization is actually taking place. -When MM is in 'Synchronize-Selected' mode: -- the iPod should automatically be mounted by MM if it's connected -- there should be a simple means for the user to 'eject' it -- there _must_ be a status indicator indicating that the connection is live and shouldn't be broken (matching the message that appears on the iPod itself) when it is mounted as a USB mass storage device.
Additional Information | Apparently, there may be a need to offer automatic mount/unmount. See: http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-2385.html

I cannot do much about mounting an USB device, it's done automatically by Windows and should always result in a mounted drive (with its letter). Problem can arise since iTunes installs a service that somehow influences the way an iPod is mounted and so if this is installed, user might need to change some settings in iTunes (enable 'Enable disk use'?). As for unmounting, the only thing I think can be made is to add an option to device Options to automatically disconnect iPod after full-synch is made. As for the status indicator, I don't understand why is it needed and where should it be. It appears on iPod (where user would disconnect the device). |
|
In that case, I think we should: a) Have the option that you suggested: [ ] Automatically unmount iPod after Auto-Synchronize b) Add an 'Eject' button appearing to the right of the device as in iTunes (re. the need for a status indicator: you're right it's not needed if the iPod icon disappears as it should when it's unmounted). |
|
As discussed over IM, change the option wording to: [ ] Automatically unmount device after Auto-Synchronize |
|
Fixed in build 852. a) As apart of the fix ejecting is now more handled in MM and in case it isn't possible an internal (i.e. skinned and more userfriendly) message is shown. b) Deferred. |

Verified 852. It's working nicely aside from the issues that remain as described in bug 0001871 . If bug 0001871 is resolved, I think that there's little need to add functionality described in B) since we can configure MM to unmount automatically (which is even better from my perspective). |
