Summary | 0001777: Change G-force promotional strategy OR Replace G-force with Geiss
Description | I just received a phone call from the guys at SoundSpectrum and they're not too happy with the results that they're getting in terms of conversions to the Gold version of G-Force. They've asked that we instead point to a downloadable version of the client that is more aggressive in asking for upgrades. I convinced them to wait until 2.3.2, but they said only if 2.3.2 is within 2 months. Let's not rush into this--I just wanted to note the issue, have a look at MusicMatch and see what they've done with G-Force since they're in a similar situation to us, and make a final decision about how to handle this today or tomorrow.

As discussed, let's defer this until MM 2.3.2, however, we'll need to release this update within 2 months. We'll have to replace G-force with Geiss (or something else), and possibly add a link to the G-force page to promote purchases and affiliate revenues (I'll see what MusicMatch has done). |
Also, as part of this, we need to determine _how_ to ensure that MM doesn't overwrite newer versions of G-force (and possibly fix 0001838, Album Art in G-force). |
Regarding overwrite. In G-Force\Boot.txt exist text line "#if _VERSION_ != 264" Which coresponds to G-Force version number and this can be possible way to determine if newer or not. |

I've written to the authors of: -Tripex 3 -Nebula 2 -Twisted Pixel asking for permission to include these plugins and get source code. Unfortunately, all of these still require 3d graphics cards, so we'll probably want to include Whitecap as well. |
Maybe I spoke too soon. I've been doing a bit more research and found that Milkdrop was just released as open source YESTERDAY!! http://www.nullsoft.com/free/milkdrop/ This means that we can get the relevant files from this plugin, modify it so that it supports unicode (use the same interface that we implemented for G-force), and then include it with MM. If we want, we can also include the Geiss plugin that we'd removed (in case users don't have 3d acceleration). What do you think? |
Per discussion: best short term path would be to: -Include Milkdrop (and possibly modify it to remove mentions of Winamp and support unicode when showing track metadata) -Include the modified version of Geiss that we'd previously included Note of interest: I tried ProjectM from sourceforge, and it looks quite promising. I used the version from a year ago and it has a couple of glitches, but it could also form the basis of a solid solution for us. The only problem is that it may be GPLed (it's unclear to me--I see LGPL and GPL licenses). |
Fixed in build 857. - Geiss included. - MilkDrop included, recompiled by me with Unicode titles support and MM logo shown at startup (can be turned off in plug-in settings). |
