| Description | There are lots of request to better support Compilation flag of iTunes Looks like it was fully covered in non standard field http://id3.org/iTunes%20Compilation%20Flag I would suggest that in MM5 we expand its support to set it to ensure Apple devices uses Artist Field instead of Album Artist field in some cases, especially if Album Artist is Various. AIMP for example have support setting the flag. | ||||

Currently id3lib we use does not recognize TCMP/TCP frame at all (as it is not standard), have to be added there first. For MP4-like files it should be in "cpil" atom, as uint8 value. Did not find it in other formats. |

Jiri, should not we add corresponding "part of compilation" field to Properties dialog? So it will be more clear, whether to set this flag or not. Or should we decide always only automatically by "Various" in Album Artist field? |

If we include this (and it probably makes sense), I'd rather make a complete solution based on data available in MusicBrainz. It includes: release status = official, promotion, bootleg, pseudo-release release type = nat, album, single, ep, compilation, soundtrack, spokenword, interview, audiobook, live, remix, other We could include several checkboxes for compilation, live, remix and possibly few other parameters. We should consider other options though, e.g. to make it a part of some 'tag' system? Or use genre field as a base for this, as it can actually represent 'tags'? There are probably some associated disadvantages and some simple boolean representation in the DB seems to make most sense. |

Complete solution would be fine, but it does not have support in tag standards, we would have to use some custom tags (or mentioned genre field), not sure if this is needed. This "part of compilation" flag is probably the only one used by more programs. |

Fixed in build 3517. Added as checkbox to Basic tab, column Compilation, filters, column filter, support for all possible formats: MP3, AIFF, WAV, DSD - TCMP/TCP in ID3v2 tag M4A/MP4/MOV - cpil atom FLAC/Ogg/Opus - COMPILATION tag with value 1 APE/MPC - Compilation tag with value 1 ASF/WMA/WMV - WM/IsCompilation tag MKV, AVI - not supported It is used now for setting compilation flag during sync to Apple device. |

1) Could there be a migration path? ie. some way to automatically set this when Album Artist is xxxxx. A. Best would be a user value (for example: Various; Various Artists). B. Fixed values Various; Various Artists & translated variants. 2) A setting to auto-set compilation on scan and rip would also be good, again with 1A being the best implementation. 3) If it's part of lookup, the option is missing in Choose fields for metadata lookup. |

Fixed in build 3518. Ripping and Autotag now can set Compilation flag based on album artist "Various Artists" from MusicBrainz (it is special value in their DB indicating compilation). Note, that we use iTunes meaning of compilation flag, where e.g. "Best of" album of one artist is not considered as compilation. During scan we read existing flag from the file, I do not think it is good to overwrite it automatically, as it would cause unsynchronized Compilation tag just after the scan. Easiest way to set it is filter tracks by own criteria in All Tracks and simply set the flag in Track Properties. I think there is no need to implement anything special for this. |

Although this now allows MM to read/write the compilation field, it complicates usability as there are now 2 different ways of creating multiple-artist/compilation albums: 1) by setting the compilation flag 2) by setting Album Artist=various (as in the past) Moreover, both settings on on the main Properties dialog, the two settings aren't necessarily in sync, and most library navigation in relation to compilation albums continues to be using 'Various' (e.g. to find compilation albums use contextual search for 'various'; navigate to Album Artists>Various). Most arguments for the use of this flag are so that the user can view/filter out compilation albums, but as far as I can tell, MM doesn't currently do this. There are 2 approaches to dealing with this (that I can think of): 1) Supporting read/write of Compilation tag, but continue with our current approach for compilation albums (in this case, the tag can be moved out of the main panel) 2) Having the compilation tag actually do something, and keeping it in the main panel. If we go with this approach: a) '[ ] Part of a compilation' should be moved down (in the Properties dialog) so that it's next to other Album properties. Ideally it would be adjacent to Album Artist (since the two are so closely related), but I can't figure out a logical arrangement of the fields for that. Alternatively we should switch it with Genre so that it's at least immediately above other album-specific attributes of Disc#/Track#. b) Since this feature replicates the setting Album Artist='Various'. If the user sets this field should should there be an orange ⓘ next to the Album Artist field (and vice versa) to notify the user that they're not in sync? c) Files to Edit > Ungrouped Multiple Artist Albums should be adjusted so that: - it also includes multiple artist albums that aren't tagged with the compilation flag - tooltip: Album Artist is not the same across all tracks on an album --> Album Artist is not the same across all tracks on an album or compilation flag isn't set d) contextual search for 'compilation' should return compilation albums? e) have Albums (= all albums), Albums (Compilations), and Albums (non-compilation) nodes' node OR a way of viewing/filtering compilation albums in the albums node? Note: in theory, this could be accomplished using filters, but this is currently too complicated -- see 0022371. |
