| Summary | 0022428: Configure View dialog box should be opened with one click from menu | ||||
| Description | When user wants to modify the current view (e.g. to change sorting order or to add fields below artwork in grid view) they need to open the Manage view dialog box first, then to click on the pencil button of the selected view to open the Configure View dialog box. This is one dialog box and one click more then it is needed/wanted. One solution: add the gear (option) icon to the right side of each view item in the View menu (main and toolbar). Click on that icon would open the Configure View dialog box for the current view directly. I don't like this solution because it would cause too much displayed gear icons on the right side of menu. Another solution: replace the Manage views option in View menu with the Configure View option; options/controls from the Manage views dialog box move to the Fields/Columns page in the Options dialog box. That page is already accessible from the Configure View dialog box with the Settings button. Or, you could add the Configure View option and keep the Manage views option in the View menu. | ||||

I just realized my second suggestion with the Manage view controls moved to the Options dialog is not possible because the views displayed in the Manage views dialog depend on the currently selected node. I suppose the best solution would be to just add the Configure View option to the Main panel view sub-menu above the Manage views option. |

I agree with the problem, but assuming that 0016714 and 0020441 are resolved, the simplest solution would be that right-clicking on the header of any view should have an option to 'Configure view' dialog for the current view (this would replace the 'Configure columns' dialog that appears for many views) so that MM doesn't have 2 similar but different dialogs and all settings can be configured in one place. |

First of all, I don't like term "Configure columns" for grid views for the reason explained in 0022429. The problem with your suggestion is that not all views have a header. There is missing header in the file-based Grid views (Folders and Location nodes) that I mentioned in 0020440 and that header is really needed. But, I think there are some grids that don't really need it displayed, e.g. Grid (Genres) or Grid for Artist node or Years, Ratings, Classification... |

It's true that not all views have a header, but for views that have a header, users would expect to be able to configure it there. Soo.. a) For most views (except some Grid views), right-clicking on columns --> Column settings. This should be changed to 'Configure View' and just open the 'Configure view' dialog for the current view so that MM doesn't have 2 different dialogs (Column settings + View settings) and all settings can be configured in one place. b) We could add a 'Configure view' button above 'Manage views' button so that there's an obvious means of configuring the current view for views without a header. |

'Playing' panel has the List layout with the header. If you right-click on that header you will get displayed Column settings option. 'Playing' panel doesn't have ability to set its view, hence it cannot have the Configure view option. I think it would be inconsistent if you don't get the same "Column settings" option in the context menu of header in the main panel having the similar list as 'Playing'. By the way, Grid (by Album) does have a header, but its context menu does not display options from context menus of other list headers. It displays the same options as the context menu of any item in the grid. |

a) Yes, the Playing panel is a special case. But I'd prefer that it be consistent with other nodes/views in terms of configuration (especially considering that the View Configuration panel makes it clear which settings are applied where) and that we only special-case the Playing panel. b) Re. Grid (by Album), it has a header, and so it should display the context menu to 'Configure View'. But some views (e.g. Location [Grid] don't currently have a header above the top portion of the grid. |

In my opinion, the other nodes/views are already consistent. The current context menu of all headers displays only options related to the columns of filelist. I think it is not logical that the context menu of header has Configure view option that determine e.g. displayed Elements like Column filter or Tree (Folders) or whatever else, which definitely doesn't belong to the filelist. |
