| Summary | 0020440: Grid view should have displayed header and sorting ability for track-oriented views (Folders and Location) | ||||
| Description | If I have a folder with many files by different artists (i.e. singles that don't belong to albums), I would like to be able to sort them by different criteria, just as with the files in List view. At least by Artist and Title, but maybe even by Genre, Date, Original Date and Added. | ||||

Sorting by attributes that aren't visible caused confusion in the past--that's why in the Album grid view it's only sortable by Album Attributes. |
Well, almost three years passed since I opened this issue and I really don't remember what I was talking about. However, I don't think that I meant on Grid (by Album), but on Grid view. I just discovered that if I switch to the List view, set the wanted sorting and switch back to the Grid view, I will get files in the grid sorted as I wanted. |
The workaround that I described in my previous post is not too much intuitive and requires more steps than someone would want. It would be much better if you add a header to the Grid view with the ability to add/remove fields to it, which could be used to set sorting order, just like with headers in the other views. List view have it. List (by Album) view have it, Grid (by Album) view have it. It is only Grid view without header. |

Sorts should generally only be on fields that are visible in the view. That's why the number of sorts in current Griid views is so limited. A better solution to this issue is described ot 0020441 |

Your current sorting in Grid view is not intuitive. It is done on fields that are not visible in that view, but in view that was previously displayed, as I described already. It is not intuitive if you need to sort tracks by switching to another view like List and back again to Grid to get tracks in Grid sorted as you want. My suggestion that requires added header to the Grid view is more simple. In that way, the sorting fields would be visible in the view. Again, I am talking about Grid view that is based on tracks, not about Grid (by Album). |

The Grid view for track-oriented views (Folders and Location nodes) should have header that could allow setting of sorting order, just as Grid (videos) view for Video / All videos node. |

It is fine that you have added ability for sorting of Grid view in b3526, but its configuration is possible only through the Configure View dialog box that requires multiple clicks and several opened dialog boxes. It would be much easier if the Grid view has displayed header that would be available directly on the main panel. As I said, Grid (videos) view for Video / All videos node is similar to the Grid view for track-oriented views (Folders and Location nodes) and it already has a header. Such difference in its look is not consistent. |

Grid (Video) has a 'Column settings' context menu, but Grid (Albums) doesn't. and both should use the same approach, to be solved per the solution described at 0022428. |

I just re-reviewed this and realize that I misunderstood the issue. The issue is really that Grid views for Locations and Folders do not allow columns to be set for the bottom portion of the view which contains files. We have two options: 1) Eliminate the Grid view for these nodes. This could make sense since a grid view of individual track/video video images don't currently display much metadata, and therefore sorting doesn't make much sense. The Browser view, in contrast, uses a Grid for folders and a list for the tracks, which makes much more sense. 2) We can fix the grid view by allowing configurable metadata to be displayed with individual files, and allow the user to sort by that metadata. (in the manner described at 0022499. e.g. Configure View: CollectionName > Location Name: . . . Grid View type: Grid File metadata (applies to <ViewName> for the <ColumnSetting>): _Title_ [-] [+] _Album_ [-] [+] _Year_ [-] [+] Sorting (applies to <ViewName> for the <ColumnSetting>): _Year_ [-] [+] _Title_ _Field 3_ Elements (applies to <ViewName> for <Parent> > <ChildNode> Node): [ ] Element1 [ ] Element2 ... Note: -The Grid view in these nodes already _does_ allow the user to configure Fields/Metadata but not in the manner described at 0022499 - The Grid view in these nodes already allows the user to configure sorting but sort fields don't display so it's not particularly useful |

1) Please, no! The Grid view do display much metadata since you added the ability to configure 3 fields displayed below artwork (0020441). I don't care too much if you will add the header to the Grid view, but I really wouldn't like if you remove Grid view for Folders and Location nodes. As I said in 0020441: There are situation when the users would want to display some fields below artwork that don't need to be sorted by, e.g. I could want to display file size or song length below Title, but I don't want the items in grid to be sorted by that additional fields. Or, I could want to have displayed Title and Artist, but to sort the items by Path. Please consider also my suggestion in 0022500 which would allow displayed more than 3 fields per item without adding extra rows. |
