Summary0008976: Some generic metadata should be added to ripped tracks that have no metadata
DescriptionFor custom CDs or foreign language CDs, FreeDB often doesn't contain any metadata. This, combined with the limitations of metadata editing for the CD Ripping function (described in 0002624) results in many blank tracks appearing in the user's collection.

It was suggested that there should be a default title, artist name, album name to resolve this. e.g. tags such as "title1", "unknown artist", "unknown album".

TagsNo tags attached.

This is an issue, however, Ludek suggested that the proposed solution wouldn't work well for a number of reasons:
1) it would result in double entries of 'Unknown Artist', 'Unknown Album' etc. (i.e. there's name conflict between the node and the assigned values)
2) the metadata would be meaningless to other apps (i.e. 'Unknown Artist' in Japanese would result in incorrectly categorized content).

The solution that we would like to pursue is described at 0002624 -- we'd like to make it obvious to the user how to edit the metadata so that it's saved in a meaningful fashion.

The primary reason why the customer consider this as an issue is that when you user ripped several CDs (this may be unique to Japan, but many Japanese users rip CDs a lot). If FreeDB does not work, it would be difficult to find album/artist/songs in the library, since no names are used.

Generic metadata wouldn't solve the problem described by eiji, but it would at least prevent the problem of tracks being ripped and the tracklist appearing empty. To solve this, and mitigate the issues raised by Ludek at 0008976#c29925, we could instead rip to e.g.:

1) Improve the status bar
Converting file 1 of 2 ()
--->
Converting file 1 of 2 (track1.cda)

2) Include a title i.e. currently for 01Unknown - Unknown.mp3
Title=""
--->
Title="01Unknown - Unknown"

That will resolve the worst aspects of the problem since at least the user will be able to see the track.

3) It would also be nice if MM could automatically assign some random Album e.g. Unknown CD_xxx so that the tracks could be grouped as part of a single Album.

3) Could be implemented as 'Unknown Album (current date/time)', since the first part is already localized and the second makes it unique.

As discussed with Eiji, this is as designed.

Note: the rationale is that assigning 'Unknown Artist' would cause the issues described by Ludek at http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=8976#c29925 , and it doesn't make sense to apply 'Unknown Artist_xxxx' since MM really has no knowledge of whether the artists of all of the ripped tracks are identical.
