Summary0005984: WMA play fails on vanilla Win XP SP2
DescriptionFrom http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39960&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=Win+XP+SP2+fail+WMA

1 Make a fresh default installation of Win XP SP2 and MM and launch MM
2 File | Open URL or File, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\title.wma , press OK.

Expected: track plays.
Observed: track does not play.

The expectation is based on http://www.mediamonkey.com/download/
"Installing MediaMonkey
MediaMonkey ... has been tested on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Vista." from which the user may reasonably assume that "Windows XP" meets the minimum requirement, and hence so does "Windows XP SP2".

Workaround: run http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/WMFDist11 ... 86-ENU.exe

Note: This is not a circumstance covered by http://tinyurl.com/p4pj3s "WMA Tracks can't Burn, Play, Tag, Convert, Sync or be Analysed", specifically not either of:

Faulty Windows Media Components can cause WMA files to fail ...
It is most likely caused by outdated or corrupted Windows Media

EDIT: Seems likely related to http://www.mediamonkey.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=38768

EDIT: http://www.mediamonkey.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=41557&p=216530#p216530 seems to be the same problem and workaround but with MP3.

EDIT: I discovered this report had been subject-tagged "[0005571]", whereas 5571 http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5571 is a different issue, so I have removed that tag.

Jiri, would the codec detection routine (0006493) work for this? Then all we'd need is to point to the relevant windows executable.

Michal, can we use the codec detection routines in this case?

I don't think it's anything urgent though, since it probably applies only the clean XP installations, which will probably be very rare. That said, would be nice to fix.

Resolving, I did not reproduce it. I tried 3 fresh installations of XP - WinXP SP2 ENG, WinXP SP2 CZ and WinXP (no SP) with SP2 installed separately. Everywhere the file was playing without problem, it must be some very rare situation and somehow broken(?) installation of XP.
I cannot use video codec detection routines, they detect missing DirectShow components, and audio is not played through DirectShow.

Michal, I am really surprised you got a different result. I took great care in my test, inc. the fresh OS install, and performed it a second time with the same result. Can you suggest how I can better communicate the failing test conditions to you?

Chris, could it be that you're using Windows XP N edition (i.e. the version that's missing WMP)? My guess is that you are and that Michal didn't test with that version.

Yes, it must be some different edition, I don't have another, tried all 3 I have (Home, Pro). The only way is to test it with the same installation media/image.

Obsolete. MS issued several fixes with main Win Codecs but for SP3

> Obsolete.

Does this refer to the version of MediaMonkey or to the version of Windows XP?

If the latter, it is factually in error. This version of WinXP - SP2 - is not obsolete. Further, it is covered by the system requirements statement of this version of MediaMonkey.

Chrisjj:
Please read http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=Windows+XP End of life for XP SP2 was 11. January 2011 (Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2) and 13. July 2010 (Windows XP Service Pack 2). MS fixed WMA things in SP3 on several occasions.

No. As I said, this is vanilla Win XP SP2. Unlike XP N it does include WMP and has done since install.

Peke, please read http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obsolete and more importantly http://www.mediamonkey.com/download/
"MediaMonkey runs on Windows platforms only. It is supported on all 32/64 bit versions of Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP"

That's why your "no change required" is untrue. While MM is sold as supporting "all versions of Win XP", it should do so.

user_chrisjj: but what exactly version of installation media did you use? As I wrote, I've tried on fresh install of WinXP SP2 ENG, WinXP SP2 CZ and WinXP (no SP) with SP2 installed separately. Everywhere the file was playing without problem, cannot reproduce your problem at all.
