Summary0002119: Documentation: Synchronization: some tracks fail to play on Creative MTP device
DescriptionIn build 908, when I synch to Creative Sleek, synchronization appears to work flawlessly (I see the tracks on the device via MM, and the database on the device can be browsed), however, as soon as the user tries to access certain tracks on the device, they cannot be seen or played.

This problem occurs whenever some fields (Album, Title) in MM are empty. Note however, that the problem only occurs on the device depending on the manner in which the user tries to access the tracks.

e.g.
For: Artist: Beatles, Album: , Title: Help
Browse via: All track --> track can be played
Browse via: Beatles | Album --> track cannot be seen or played
Browse via: Rock | Beatles | Album --> track cannot be seen or played

For Title="", the problem occurs whenever the user tries to play the track in question iff there's only 1 track in the category being browsed (e.g. there's only one track by 'Genesis' and the user is trying to play that track by Genesis via the Genesis directory.

I would suggest that the problem for Album is severe, but we can probably ignore the Title issue.

Ok, but it's rather a problem of Creative devices and their navigation structure, isn't it? The file is properly uploaded to device and it only isn't shown to user in some cases. The same happens if you upload the file using WMP.

What exactly do you think should be done? Set metadata to 'Unknown' instead of ''? Could be, but I'm not sure it's always desirable.

Btw, I can reproduce on Creative Zen Micro.

How about setting ALBUM to 'unknown' on-the-fly and ignoring 'unknown' fields when synching back to the device.

I'm guessing that this probably isn't worth our time, but just asking...

The alternative would be to document the issue and tell users to manually change empty album fields to 'unknown'.

Yes, that's what I was suggesting by: Set metadata to 'Unknown' instead of ''.

However, as you wrote, it doesn't seem to be worth our time, it's rather a firmware issue. So, I'd only document it e.g. in forums.

I'll create a section in the faq for this.
