Summary | 0001967: CD Burn speed is reduced to 6x when DVD is inserted
Description | I just noticed a very strange thing: 1) Insert a CD into my drive, and try to burn a bunch of tracks --->'Normal' CD burning speeds are available 2) Insert a DVD into my drive, and try to burn a bunch of tracks --->DVD burning speeds are limited to 6x!! 3) Insert a CD back into the drive and try to burn a bunch of tracks --->'Normal' CD burning speeds are available again For some reason, inserting a DVD causes MM to get confused. Note: I use a NEC 3500ag

I don't understand what's wrong about this. MM (as well as many other applications) automatically checks available burning speeds of inserted media and lets user select any of them. I suppose your drive (or the inserted medium) is only capable of 6x burning. Also, don't forget that burning speeds of CDs are multiples of about 150KB, but DVDs are in multiples of 8x higher number, i.e. 6x DVD speed is 48x of CD. |
I should have elaborated, the max speeds indicated were exactly as follows in quotes: CD: '32x (4800 KB/s)' DVD: '6x (900 KB/s)' So maybe the solution is to have another Table of speeds for DVDs so that when a DVD is inserted, the speed is indicated correctly. |
Ok, I see. Since currently only audio CD burning is supported, DVD support wasn't considered as important. This will become important when data CD burning is implemented, assigning to Ludek. |
Ok, the speeds were corrected in build 910. |
Tested with my device again, and only '6x' is available (no other options are listed)! Is it possible that the media I'm using is causing this limitation? |
Yes, 6x is regular DVD speed. I have changed 6x (150 KB/s) --> 6x (1200 KB/s) in case of DVD which is right. And Yes, the 6x can be the only speed which your DVD media supports. |
I haven't got into the code, but there probably is something wrong. The thing is that 1x speed for CD is 150KB/s, but 1x speed for DVD is 8 times more, i.e. 1200KB/s. When I inserted DVD+RW, MM showed 3x(450KB/s) for 4x certified media. So some information is definitely wrong. |
Yes, thx. I found that it wasn't resolved right, but problem described by Jiri in the 6174 note is stange, cause I have never noticed this, it should be tested again. Corrected in build 912, works fine for me - tested on DVD-R,DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW. |
Tested in 912. Now when I insert a DVD: -The only available burn speed is listed as 5x (note: when I use other applications, the available burn speed is 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 6x). -The actual speed in Mbps is displayed properly Is there any additional logging info that might be able to help solve the problem that the available speeds that are listed in MM don't include all actually available speeds? |
Yes, same to me. 5x instead of 6x, but this occurs because hpCDBurn cannot set this speed, I found that it allways burned at 5x in these cases, but 6x was showed up - this was fixed so It works fine. |
I'm reopening this bug to checking this problem again because one of our testers indicated some problems with speed settings: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6591 Hopefully fixed in build 917. Added: Last used speed for burning is saved. Go to http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6582 for reading of primary suggestion. |
On my system, there is still very strange behavior: When a CD is inserted: only available options are 2x and 4x (even though it should be up to 24x) When a DVD is inserted: only available option is 5x. Given the new change in bug 0002195, many users will now not be able to burn a DVD at all!! |
Fixed in build 918: 1. I can't reproduce this, works fine for me. Haven't you inserted a media that only allows these speeds? 2. If a non-Gold user doesn't have any usable speed in the list, there's automatically 2x speed added (both for CDs and DVDs). |
Tested in 918 and when I insert a DVD I can now set it to burn speed of 2x however when I attempt a burn I receive the following message: Burning was not successful: Could not set the required speed. |
As I wrote over IM, I'm not sure what to do with this (if anything). If combination of drive and media doesn't support <=2x speed, I don't see any good option for non-Gold version. |
Assigning to Ludek because we discussed over IM a fix that will hopefully work well. |
Fixed in build 919, there was a need to make some changes in hpCDBurn.dll, works fine for 2x now. + Position of 'Max Speed' on the burn settings page changed to be more obvious that it is the max speed of the drive and not of the inserted media. |
