Summary | 0001708: Too many freedb connection problems
Description | We receive a fair number of questions from users about problems connecting to freedb and I receive a fair number of e-mails on the subject as well. I think that the majority of the problems are due to the fact that we connect to freedb.org and sometimes, the server to which it links is unavailable. The problem then is that the user has no way to find out what alternative servers they can connect to. I would suggest one of the following to solve this: 1) Provide a dropdown list of available servers so that the user can easily try alternates. The list of servers can be updated via the versions.xml mechanism. 2) Provide an url 'Alternate Servers' which links to: http://www.freedb.org/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=9 right next to the Server __________ configuration. That way the user has an idea of what they can do instead. This is not really 'immediate' but since the 2nd option is basically a text change, I thought it would be worth considering.
