Summary0008071: Data CD/DVD burning problems with some old drives
DescriptionI've done extensive Backup Burning with MM today (60 CDs). Occasionally, 10 CDs failed to burn correctly. All of those CD fails were followed by PC Restart (Drive was locked and burning could not be terminated, even MM was Actually responsive and I was able to play files) and re-burning same CDs which was in 99% of cases OK (I only got one failed reburn, followed by another reburn and success).

I know that log file do not show much but I only managed to fetch these as each time I start DBGview along with MM CD gets Burned correctly.

Log Is uploaded to FTP
TagsNo tags attached.
Fixed in build1415

Added additional more complete Burn LOG to FTP, that should catch error better.

I analyzed the 'Peke Burn 2.log' and it failed twice for the same file:
F:\Muzika Vlada Nestorovic\Mp3 Komplet Zabavna Muzika\YU Pop Rock Nostalgija\YU Pop Rock Nostalgija 04\Zabranjeno Pusenje - Guzonjin Sin.mp3

So if you try to burn just that file, does it always fail?

Yes it burns correctly,

Also it only happen on one of my burners so if I change burner it writes without problem and MM play that file correctly.

Peke, have you also tested how it works in MM3, i.e. whether it's a regression?

No problems in MM3.

Apron further investigation it looks that MM4 do not set correct Speed when using My old TEAC CD-W540E MM 3 works flawlessly.

From the 'Peke Burn2.log' I see that you have manually set speed 2822 KB, it corresponds to 2x.
So in MM3 the speed is different? Could you generate log also from MM3?
Does MM4 fail if you set the maximum speed (6x)?
Also please ensure that you are using the same write methods in both MM versions.

Peke, please test MM4 with DLL from FTP: MMbugs/bug8071/hpCDBurn.dll
- I downgraded PrimoBurner 3.0.7 back to 2.5.8 in order to find whether the regression is in Primo's or in our code

I reset PC several times to try to catch what happen and it looks that MM do not lock drive in exclusive mode while burning, so as soon as Windows Try to read/Access Data/TOC from Drive (Video Attached) MM slows DOWN to <1x speed.

On lower Speeds it slows after TOC is written in DiskAtOnce Mode.

Drive is Teac CDR-W540E and it is known that it had issues in the Past see http://tinyurl.com/686o39h
Burn Speed is set to 16x for CD burning See Setting pics from MM3 and it was same in MM4.

NOTE: Other optirac DVD drive works without problem, even Virtual DVD Burner works. Is it possible that the issue is with CD-RW drives?

EDIT: As you will see on Log Burn Sim has finished OK.

BTW why in Log I do not clearly see what drive is selected and its parameters that were set before burn.

Lowering to high,
Peke indicated that it fails also with MM3, but only on Win7 64bit, not on Win XP, it looks very similar to 0005023 where the drive slows its burn speed when it is accessed by another app/thread. Hard to do something about it, it is kind of incompatibility between PrimoBurner v2.5 and higher, drive FW and Win 64bit OS. Maybe FW update would help, but it seems that the drive's newest firmaware is 8 years old: http://www.teac.co.jp/dspd/download/firmware/cd-w540e/fwcdrome.html

Peke indicated that also the Primo sample app fails, burn speed slows down to 0.16x

Sample app from the newset Primo version (3.0.6) works fine. So upgrading should fix this issue.

Fixed in build 1409 by updating Primo libs to the version 3.0.6

So you are indicating (in 0006184) that the Primo update didn't help?
Does the Primo burner sample (that works?) still shows the speeds multiplied by 1000 for the drive?

Please generate debug log from 1411.

1. yes, I observe same behavior in 1411. Just in Case I retested it today

2. No, speeds are correctly read (not multiplied by 1000) in example app of Primo 3.6.0

Will add LOG file later.

Thanks, the difference between the DVDBurner sample app and MM seems to be in using exlusive access parameter when getting the device.
So I set the parameter -> new hpCDBurn.dll uploaded, so try it out.
