It seems the problem is probably with UPnP server, it throws "NPT_ERROR_CONNECTION_ABORTED" error. MM video player cannot read from the stream even the first 12B and that is why it cannot play it. Assigning to Ludek to look into it.

One possible problem with MM as client is that I believe it was creating a temp file in Document and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp (can't confirm as I can no longer play the file in MM) and this drive only has 210MB free. This is why all MM temp folders have been set to another drive which has +/- 3GB free.
When playing to Samsung/Sony TV there seems to be no temp file usage as free space remains the same on both drives.

Just to confirm I streamed a large MPG to the Samsung TV from the same PC using PlayOn and it worked for the full movie.
