Summary0005241: Creative Zen Syncing Problems
DescriptionThe syncing for these players are locking during the sync process which causes you to have to cancel the sync and perform a forced rebuild, which could actually be leading to the second problem which are duplicates being put onto the player after the first initial sync. Which must be done after re-formatting the player.

Completed some more tests:

1. auto sync player, all is well (1516 tracks/77 playlists)
2. played tracks on player, all is still well
3. run an autosync, all appears well but player locks up forcing a rebuild
4. after rebuild ran auto sync, this time (1512 tracks/72 playlists) when it should be (1516 tracks/77 playlists)
5. directly after ran another auto sync, this time (1518 tracks/76 playlists) when it should be (1516 tracks/77 playlists)
6. removed autoplaylists to get consistent results, ran another auto sync, this time (1482 tracks/73 playlists) when it should be (1481 tracks/72 playlists)
7. removed playlists, ran another auto sync, locked up so once again needed to complete a rebuild
8. tried to run auto sync again. this time (1422 tracks/69 playlists) when it should be (1422 tracks/68 playlists)
9. played 10 tracks, ran an auto sync, this time (1354 tracks/69 playlists) when it should be (1422 tracks/68 playlists)

Setting as resolved until we get more info (a debug log).

I tried to upload the debug log of a successful sync but I get an error message, you can download from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?mh0dq2jwwzo Let me know if you are unable to download it.

Here is the debug log of the sync of my Zen X-Fi trying to sync. After a couple of minutes the screen when black and the light changed to the yellow/red signifying a problem (the light should stay green and the screen should stay on).

Unfortunatelly, I don't see anything useful in the log. To me it looks like some driver bug, since MM just by using MTP interface shouldn't cause the device to malfunction. We could only try to do something about it, in case we get some more info about when does the problem occur, i.e. whether it's related to synchronization of some specific track with some specific metadata values (including bitrate, samplerate or anything else).

I don't know how else to send in a debug log, but it doesn't happen at the same point. But it is possible it is the same track since 90% of my syncs are the same tracks but I do not know how to identify which one(s) it is. I guess I am stuck using Winamp to sync back and forth with my player. Unless someone knows if there is another Vista driver that I should be using?

Unfortunatelly I can't help much, since I can't reproduce using any of my Zen testing devices. You only can try to upgrade your device frimware to the latest version, in case there is any available. As for the track causing the problem, you can check out the last lines in MM debug log, you should fine its filename there. Just in case you find some pattern...

Jiri:

I already have the latest firmware and any standard drivers which came with Vista. I will conduct some more tests this weekend to try to determine if it is a specific track(s) which is causing the problem. But it has to be something with the Zen and the WDM plugin because I am able to sync all the same tracks/playlists using both WMP and Winamp.

Do you mind if I ask which Zen devices you are using and what operating system? I am using Vista Ultimate with a Zen X-Fi 32gb. I also have the Zen 8gb and a Zen Vision M 60gb, but these two sync without any problems, so it has to be something related the the X-Fi Zen. I would really like to get this resolved because using both Winamp and Mm is not something I want to do continuously.

I don't have Zen X-Fi, just some older models. I wonder whether there any other X-Fi users having similar problems, have you seen anything in the forum?

Anyway, hopefully you'll find something useful on further synchronizations...

I know of at least one: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=35829&hilit=zen

As far as the logs I have no idea what I am looking for, for the first failed one today there were no error messages or tracks listed, this time it locked up during the playlist portion of the sync. But I will keep collecting them anyway.

One of the last line of the log you sent is:

WMDM: Uploading album art, size: 8485, 180x180

i.e. the last action is uploading of album art to an album (question is though, whether the device crashes at this point, or sometimes earlier).

Few lines above is:

MP3: Tag read from D:\music\Slow Jams\Keith Sweat - Keep It Comin'.mp3

i.e. the problem was caused by uploading album art for album of track Keith Sweat - Keep It Comin'.

Thank you that is helpful. I wonder if the problem is with the art. I just looked at my sync options and I do not have any of the album art options selected, I did not select any of them since I have all my art embedded in the tags and each track only has 1 image. I will try adjusting the settings to see if this improves the syncing. I will also try removing the art from that album and see if that helps. I will also try removing that track to see what happens.

Jiri:

I think I may have found the problem, this was posted on the forums of www.anythingbutipod.com:

"My theory is that having two applications both trying to access the Zen simultaneously is what made it freeze."

This is most likely my cause because I will usually have many programs open at once, one or two of them (napster & Windows Explorer), could possibly be trying to access the Zen. So far I have had a successful sync on the first try since discovering this post. I will keep testing to see if this theory holds true. Another post said to remove all the Creative software from the computer, I have also done that so we'll see.
