Summary0000470: Expand sleep function to Alarm Clock
DescriptionThis feature is based on a user suggestion--claimed it would be his 'killer feature':

Currently, the sleep function offers 1 function of an alarm clock. Since many users (especially in North America) leave their computers on 24hrs a day, it would be very useful to allow users to use SDB as an alarm clock.

To make this really useful:
-The user should be able to set 2 alarms for each day of the week
-Duration of alarm should be settable
-Fade on should be configurable (so it gradually gets louder)
-Playlist selectable (select specific playlist/autoplaylist or what's in the 'now playing' list)
Additional Informationhttp://www.iselect.com . This app isn't designed as an alarm clock, but the scheduling functionality is supposedly very well designed.

In addition to the above, 1 of the problems with the current sleep timer is the lack of feedback re. the time that it is set for.

This should be addressed by using one of the regions of the status bar for this purpose. It should indicate:
Sleep: xx:yy (time left) -- if sleep timer is active
Alarm: xx:yy (time of the next alarm) -- if alarm is active

Another feature: Snooze -- if the alarm is going off and the user presses the spacebar, it turns off, and then turns on again in x minutes.

Another feature: if the alarm is going off and the user presses the <esc> ?? button, the alarm turns off, and the app returns to 'normal' mode.

Another feature: if the user selects a playlist that has no available music, then a default 'buzzer' should be played.

One other thought: the system tray icon should provide some status feedback re. the state of 'sleep' or alarm so that the user can see what's happening even if the app is minimized.

One other issue: user should be able to set a sleep timer using the 'fader', without having the PC turn off (today, the sleep timer is defined as PC turns off after x time).

I've given the UI to this a bit of thought. Here are proposals based on all of the above issues:

Alarm
-----

User clicks alarm button:
-->Alarm dialog

[New Alarm] [Delete Alarm]

On/Off... Name.......Time.......[S][M][T][W][T][F][S] ... Playlist ..... Fade .... Start Volume .. Max Volume .. Fade Time
[x]...... Work Days..8:30.......[ ][x][x][x][x][x][ ] ... Mellow Mix.... [x]...... 30% ........... 100%......... 5 Minutes.......[Test]
[ ]...... Weekend....10:30......[x][ ][ ][ ][ ][ ][x] ... Rock Mix...... [x]...... 30% ........... 100%......... 15 Minutes......[Test]

Within Songs-DB, the lower right portion of the status bar should have an indicator appear for the next active alarm:
Alarm: Mon 8:30am

If the user clicks this portion of the status bar, the alarm dialog should open.

Ideally, the system tray should also have an alarm icon that appears if an alarm is active (i.e. if one is set to turn on at some point in the future).

For sleep, there are just a few minor suggested changes:

Sleep
-----

Play audio for xx minutes
[x] Fade Volume
    Start Fading in: yy minutes
Fade to: zz % of current volume
[ ] Shut down PC at end

[Sleep] [Cancel Sleep]

Note: the 'Cancel Sleep' button actually turns off the sleep function (this change is suggested because it is unclear how to do so in the current UI).

If Sleep is active, then the lower right portion of the status bar should have an indicator appear:
Sleep: xx minutes (where x gradually counts down to 0)

Ideally, the system tray should also use the sleep icon (perhaps alternating with the standard SDB icon) if sleep is active.

Fixed in build 514.
 - The 'sleep' part of the bug was fixed.

Verified sleep functionality in build 541. There is a small volume-related bug, but I'll note this elsewhere.

I found a great general plug-in for this functionality at:
http://classic.winamp.com/plugins/detail.jhtml?componentId=80401

However, it doesn't seem to work with MM.

It probably uses some WinAmp specific functions. I can try to find the problem later (I'm not sure if it can be solved), however I can see some problems in using it, e.g. for a real alarm we would need to play internal MM playlists, which isn't possible in such plug-in.

I have just got the same idea (Expand sleep function to Alarm Clock ) and I think that it would be a great feature! Would be nice to see in MM3.

I guess that priority could be raised in my opinion.

Assigning to Rusty for reviewal. This feature seems to fit with the Sleep-function VERY well. Priority should be raised, maybe for v3.1. Although, it should be included NATIVE in MM, and not as a plugin imo.
