Summary0002656: Map different fields to iPod database
DescriptionA user asked that we add a feature to the iPod plugin that allows the user to specify alternate field mappings.

e.g. instead of mapping Artist to Artist, Year could be mapped to Artist. Then when the user browses the Artist field on the iPod, they would end up browsing by year.

I don't consider this to be that important, but it's an interesting idea that we might want to consider supporting since it may have other uses as well (e.g. for classical music).

Additional InformationOriginal Request:

Understandable. :) It's a major useful feature in foo_pod for foobar2000, and probably the last remaining feature that has me still using the old version of it that supports the foo_pod plugin.

As I described before, it's INCREDIBLY useful if you like your albums organized by release year. You can keep the tags correct on them in the library, but when dumping to an iPod it throws the date in front of the album name, so when you search into the "Artist" section, any albums that appear are release-year-sorted.

It makes no logical sense in my head to sort by name, since I remember the order the albums were released rather than their names. "Oh, that came from their first album." I'll jump on the forums and see if there's any interest... I know there was enough interest in the foobar/Hydrogen Audio forums that the feature was added to foo_pod long after its release, since it can be useful for customizations other than just the date.

Thanks,
Braden

Does MM have any way to "customize" tags when they are loaded on a device (iPod)? For instance, I'm currently using Foobar2000 and when I synch a FLAC file to the iPod, it is transcoded to MP3 *and* the Album tag is altered on the transcoded file to contain the copyright year of the album, so my albums get sorted on the iPod by year. This is an important feature to me, I'd love to have the ability to customize the tags as a file is transcoded. foobar handles this by giving a page on which you can define "transformations" for each tag. If you leave them blank it just copies as-is, but if you want the Album tag on the iPod to read "(YEAR) Album" you can specify that string (using variables for the appropriate tag fields) and it will get put into the iTunes DB when the file is synched. Even cooler, the ID3 tags in the file itself are still identical to the original source, so if you pull an MP3 out by hand and look at the tags, they are a 1:1 match for the FLAC. The ONLY thing affected by the setting is the entry in the iTunes DB on the iPod, which (IMHO) is the way it should be. Any chance of seeing this in a future MM version? It would probably push me over the edge to make a purchase of Gold, if that's any incentive.
